It should also be noted that the answer will also vary based on the student’s experience, subject and interest. Please see below for some of the tips that will help you make an informative decision when it comes to choosing a project topic not only for your mini-projects but also for your final year project.

Please also see our other articles listed below. These will help you in selecting a topic for the final year project.

1. Don’t wait until the Final Year of the Degree

Firstly, it is important to prepare yourself for your Final Year Project from the beginning of your degree course. This not only applies to a technical degree but also applies to all the degree courses. For instance, if your degree is in Computer Science and you have simply learnt a programming language such as C but have not created a project using the C programming language then in my opinion this knowledge of C language is not proven. This knowledge is worthless because you have not put it to the test. Unless you create a project using the acquired knowledge, the knowledge will not cement and your skills in that subject area will still be raw.

Before the start of your Final Year of study, if you have created several Mini Projects then you will have a better idea of what to choose for your Final Year Project Topic. You will also be more confident when it comes to executing your Final Year Project.

The First Tip is as soon as you learn a topic, start working on the Mini Projects related to the topic. If you are in a non-technical degree then you should start writing essays about the subject topics that you have studied so far, perhaps start a blog that can help you later down the line. If your degree course is technical such as Computer Science then you should start creating small projects, for example, small games, basic mobile apps and websites.

2. Find your Interest

The Final Year Project Selection Tips for Beginners is not complete without mentioning Student’s interests.  Importantly, in the first year of your degree, you should find the subject area of your interest. As part of any degree’s first year, various subject areas are covered. During the first year of study, it is up to you to decide what interests you.

You may have an interest in a particular programming language such as C or Java. On the other hand, you may be interested in working on solving problems using Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning. If your degree is non-technical then your interest may lie in a subject area that is close to your heart such as world socio-economical problems, eradicating poverty, child education, etc. In summary, it is absolutely important to find the area of your interest. Once you have found an area of your interest then you can start making Mini Projects in that subject area. Hence, you can prepare yourself for a more involved and complex topic for your Final Year Project.

3. Choose Simple Initial Projects

Another key point is that it is very important to choose a simple project at the beginning. This is especially important if you are beginning to like a subject area but do not have experience with it. You must start with an easy project and then start to build on this. If you start simple and complete a project, then you will gain confidence in the subject area. On the other hand, if you pick a relatively difficult project and later you find that you are not able to complete it then you will get discouraged. As a result, you will get depressed, and you will think that you cannot do this. Hence, our advice is to start with simple projects.

You may start by implementing simple features in your project and then slowly build on the level of features and complexity. This is one of the most important Final Year Project Selection Tips for Beginners.

4. Target 4 Projects before Final Year – Quality over Quantity

Generally, you must target 4 projects in the subject area of your interest before you commence your Final Year Project.

Furthermore, the topics for these 4 projects must be different from each other. These projects must not follow the same theme, for example, do not just create projects on the management topic: library management, lab management, attendance management, etc. You must be diverse when it some to choosing Topics for your Mini Projects before your Final Year Project. You should try to implement different concepts within the subject area of your choice in your Mini Projects.

Our advice will be to explore different ideas, pick a topic or programming language, and devise a list of concepts that you have learnt on the topic. This will help you start creating projects that will solve problems.

5. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Both Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are important qualities that every student should develop and this is the fifth tip in the Final Year Project Selection Tips for Beginners discussed here. This not only applies to students who are pursuing a technical degree but also to students with a non-technical degree.

When it comes to project topic ideas, maybe there are some social issues in your society, and you would try to develop an app or website for that or maybe there are a few tasks that you would try to be efficient at from your day-to-day life. By applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills you can come up with some project ideas. You may think about developing an app or website or doing a social experiment, etc.

It is important to open up your mind rather than just googling everything. The more critical thinking and problem-solving skills you apply the more innovative and creative ideas will come to you. This is an iterative process, and you will improve these skills after developing two to three projects.

6. Project Topic Ideas Machine

Once you have determined a subject area of your interest and have brainstormed solutions to some problems then you will automatically become an idea machine.

By following the strategy given in this blog post, you will broaden your thinking process. As a result, you will easily answer the question How to Choose a Project Topic.
